Preseason Begins!

The 2010 Cowgirl's got at it on Wednesday, August 4th with a 6AM fitness test and two training sessions. The Pokes return 16 players and are welcoming 7 freshmen to the 2010 roster. First exhibition game is on Saturday, August 14th at 1PM as we host the Regis University Rangers at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. Upcoming events include Media Day on August 7th and a preseason trip to beautiful Jackson, WY from August 8th - 11th. More on that soon!

Day Camp 2010

Wyoming Soccer is hosting its annual day camp this week in sunny Laramie. 65 players aged 4-12 are enjoying working with the Wyoming Coaching Staff. In addition, returning players Katie Amsberry, Meagan Burke, Cassie Sheffield, Bostyn Burger, Carmen Blume and Chelsea Coddington are sharing their soccer expertise. Camp runs through June 11th and the campers are pumped for the start of World Cup 2010 the same day! Our Advanced Residential and High School Team Camps will start at the end of July. 2010 Schedule Released!

University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer head coach Danny Sanchez announced his team's fall schedule today, which includes 11 home games and matches against four teams that made the NCAA Tournament last year. In all, UW will play 19 regular season games and one exhibition in 2010.

The first action for the Cowgirls will be an exhibition game against Regis University in Laramie on Saturday, Aug. 14. The first regular season match for Wyoming will be at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex against rival Northern Colorado in the Front Range Derby on Friday, Aug. 20.

"We feel that we have put together a very solid non-conference schedule that will prepare us for Mountain West Conference play," said Sanchez. "Opening with regional rivals Northern Colorado and the University of Colorado will definitely give us an early idea of where we are at."

After facing UNC, the Cowgirls will travel to Boulder, Colo. for a match against Big 12 member Colorado followed by three straight home games with Buffalo (Aug. 27), Idaho (Aug. 29) and Colorado College (Sept. 2).

After the three game set at home, the Cowgirls will take to the road for five straight starting with a trip to Atlanta, Ga. to face 2009 Atlantic Sun Conference Champion Kennesaw State on Sept. 5. Continuing on the road the Cowgirls will face Montana, Eastern Washington, Creighton and Drake. The non-conference schedule will finish with home games against 2009 WAC Champion Boise State on Sept. 24 and New Mexico State on Sept. 26.

The Mountain West Conference season will start against BYU on Oct. 2 in Laramie. The next three conference games will be on the road against Utah (Oct. 8), UNLV (Oct. 14) and San Diego State (Oct.16).

The Cowgirls will return home and have three consecutive MWC home games against TCU (Oct. 22), New Mexico (Oct. 24) and Air Force (Oct. 30) to wrap-up the regular season.

The 2010 MWC Tournament will start Nov. 3 in San Diego, Calif.

"Once again every Mountain West Conference game will be a battle," Sanchez said. "Opening with BYU will be a real test for us and will really set the tone for the following three game stretch on the road."

The Cowgirls begin practice for the 2010 season Aug. 4.

Wyoming Soccer at Wembley Stadium, London. Next time we are playing in here!

Today the team woke up after a long days trip yesterday, and we were off to Westfield mall for a quick shopping trip after Jason got car sick (although he managed to keep it in) this morning on the bus. After about two hours of shopping we went to Wembley Stadium. Our tour guide Ainsley was incredibly enthusiastic and informed us of many things we did not know about Wembley Stadium, including a bunch of world records the stadium holds, like the world record for the most number of toilets in a stadium which was 2618 toilets. The stadium also holds up to 90,000 fans, and also is the largest covered stadium in the world. Wembley holds many sporting events as well as concerts, like Michael Jackson who has had the most concerts there and sold out 7 nights in the row! If you think about 90,000 people times 7 concerts.. thats a ton of people. There were many great things to see in the stadium, like the Royal box which had blue seats instead of red throughout the stadium and that is where the royal family sits when they are taking in the events at the stadium. While going around behind the scenes of the stadium we got to see the locker room of team England and were able to take pictures with the jerseys of some of the great English players like David Beckham and Wayne Rooney.

Once finished the tour we we got to visit the shop at Wembley and look around and some of the national team gear and club team gear. After we were all done at Wembley we headed to our fourth and final game of this trip against Fullham Ladies where we finished the game with a 6-0 decision in our favor. The goal scorers of the game included Mara Cosgrove, Chelsea Coddington, Allison Masumiya, Katie Amsberry, Emma Wilson and Jules Candelaria, and 7th goal by Morgan Johnson which was called offside and didn't count....dicey decision by the ref! The highlight was senior Emma Wilson scoring on a 30 yeard bomb with no time left..that is a way to end your Cowgirl career! Instead of playing two 45 minute halves this game we played three 30 minutes. It was great to play for the seniors one last time and a great way to end the year off and our trip in Europe. Although we all have enjoyed this trip and have loved being in Europe, everyone is really looking forward to getting home and being with friends and family for the summer....see everyone in Laramie soon! Cowgirl's at Buckingham Palace

Today we went to Buckingham Palace, where we were told the Queen would come to greet us (that was a lie...). We arrived just in time to see the changing of the guard, which is apparently a very big deal judging by the size of the crowd. We had to hire our own guards (Jason, Brian, and Darren) to block the crowd for our team photo; they did a mediocre job at best. It was difficult to see anything over the crowds gathered at the fence as we are soccer players (i.e. vertically challenged), but if you jumped, stood on your tippy toes and held your camera above your head you could catch a glimpse and separate yourself out as a real tourist all at one time!

We then headed out toward the bus to tour the city (against our bus driver’s EU contract) before we were let loose to explore London for ourselves. As we were coming to the drop off site, Darren and Jason brought a competition to the table. The group/pair with the most pictures of important tourist sites (and anything of utter interest) would win the grand prize of....free Under Armour Wyoming shirts! So as the door opened to let us out, it was either the frenzy of the city or the enthusiasm of the competition, groups dispersed within seconds in search of the Prince and all of the other wonder’s London had to offer.

I (Chelsea) found myself with Carmen and Courtney after the groups broke off. We headed to the tube (London’s subway system) to see Big Ben and all the surrounding sites. I learned that Big Ben refers to the bell inside the tower instead of the actual clock. Carmen used her professional photography skills and fancy camera to capture some amazing shots. As we were going about in our tourist ways, I realized that the London locals are quite friendly in comparison to the smug Dutch. Tired of posing for pictures, we went in and out of numerous stores for some shopping for ourselves and of course family members and friends. We walked quite a distance (to say the least) in search of the Hard Rock Cafe for drinks and dinner. Carmen and Courtney were happy to find our waitress was Canadian as well (they are always SO proud of their Canadian heritage). After we had dinner we headed for the tube (instead of making the trek back to Piccadilly Circus, where most of our shopping was done). From here we met up with half of the team and wasted some time walking around and sharing our stories.
However the only thing we found in common with Wyoming was the horses, many of the police in London are ride horses.

I (Emily) found myself with Bostyn and Nicole. Everyone took off in their own directions but we headed for the toilets and sandwiches to get our trip going. I really wanted to go to the Chelsea Stadium and megastore so we proceeded to the Tube to get all day passes and ride our way to the stadium. We traveled the Piccadilly line to the exchange stop at South Kensington for the District line that took us to the Fulham Broadway exit where our destination was located. I think that more cities need to have a subway system like London’s tube, after all I am going to Graduate school for Transportation Engineering. It was relatively easy to use and all in English! We did some shopping at the megastore, took some pictures, and traveled back towards the London Eye. We went on the Westminster Bridge to get a good look of the city and took landscaping pictures with Big Ben, the Parliament, and the London Eye. We then proceeded to the craziest store I have ever been to, Primark. That place was a zoo! I almost couldn’t handle the chaos but fought through it to buy shirts for 1.50 pounds (I just can’t miss a deal that good). I am concerned that there may have been a sweatshop in the back room though, seriously, clothes shouldn’t be that cheap. When we escaped Primark with a dent in our wallets it was time for some R&R. A nice italian restaurant with patio was the perfect place for dinner. We ended the day with a stop at Lily Whites (the greatest sporting goods store in the world!) to buy some last minute items (i.e. the full Chelsea Kit much to the amusement of my teammates). Dragging our feet to the bus we managed to find some Gelato to top off the day.

Most of the team explored to main tourist sites like the London Eye, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, and the Parliament Building. For the Harry Potter enthusiasts (SIDNEY JONES) there was platform 9 and 3/4 to visit. That is all for now.

NOTE: PLEASE READ THIS IN AN ENGLISH ACCENT!!
Today started unlike any other. We woke up at 8am and ate a lovely first breakfast in England. It was a normal breakfast other than the baked beans. We all then headed to our third game of the trip against Watford Ladies at the Metrolpolitan Sports Ground. Kick off was at 10:30am. We went into the vistor's team room, and it was.... different. A bit smaller then we are used to, but this allowed us to bond even more as a team. The game was cold with a slight drizzle every now and then. Katie scored a goal assisted by a cross from the right by Morgan. This ended up being the only goal of the match with the Cowgirl's winning 1- nil. Following the game, some girls showered, while others just cleaned themselves up for our tour of the Windsor Castle. We hung out in the clubhouse with the other team after everyone was changed. We ate sandwiches and conversed with the other team and made some new English friends! We tried multiple types of sandwiches, chips (that replicated Lays called Walkers), and muffins.

Once we left the clubhouse, we made our way to the Windsor Castle, which is where the Queen stays on the weekends. When we got through security, there were headsets for us to use if we wanted. Everyone grabbed one since we wanted to learn more about the history of the castle. The castle was HUGE! We all went through a tour of the State Apartments which included different rooms of the castle like the King's Chamber, The King's closet,The Queen and King's drawing rooms, and our personal favorite St. George's Hall whch held all of the garder knights' shields. If the knight's committed a crime, their shields would be white. Some other girls waited in line to see the Doll house which held all of the china in the castle. It was a replicate of the actual castle. After we finished the tour, we walked towards the exit and saw the changing of the guards. Pretttttyyyy COOL! The guards at this castle were not allowed to be touched and we weren't allowed to make them smile or we would get in trouble. Even with this in mind, the three of us took a picture with the new guard and it was pretty intimidating. After the castle, we had an hour to wander around and look in all of the stores. We met some pretty cool people; it was nice to be in a place where they spoke English and we didn't have to pay for water or ketchup! We met a guy who had season tickets for Arsenal which cost 980 pounds per season. We then bumped into the Queen. Lucky us. She insisted no pictures. After our fortunate findings we made our way towards the bus.
The drive home was quiet as most girls just slept. We FINALLY finished watching the Green Mile. We got back to the hotel about an hour later and some girls napped, while others showered and hung out until dinner. Dinner was at 7:30pm and it was delicious regardless of the warnings of bad food. Dinner consisted of curry chicken, rice, amazing lasagna, vegetables and delicious desserts! Tonight we plan to hang out with the Watford Ladies soccer team, but we will see what happens!

Wyoming Cowgirl's with the squad from SC'T Zand after the match

Yesterday morning the team went on the PSV Stadium tour home of PSV indhoven of the dutch first divison. We got to see the business club seating, the locker rooms, conference rooms, the field and the lounges where the players hangout after their games. The tour lasted about an hour and we learned a lot about the stadium and it’s history. After the tour, we went to the PSV shop where they had the most colorful cleats we’ve ever seen. Once everyone had picked out what they wanted from the shop, we headed to Eindhoven. We were let free for 2 hours to grab lunch and shop. There were all types of shops, food places, and also some very interesting architecture. Once we all met up at the bus, we went back to the hotel for what I thought was a delicious dinner. We had cream of mushroom soup, chicken, french fries, and some veggies. We saved desert for later because after we ate we headed straight to our game against SC'T Zand. When we got to the fields everyone was staring at us and one boy asked “Where are you from?” and we replied “America” and he went on to say “Very bad, very bad.” Anyway, the facility was very nice and we played on a large turf field. The team we played were very technical and had some good oppurtunites to score, but we were able to pull off the 1-0 win on a goal by Kerstyn! After the game was over we took pictures with the other team and went into the pub at the facility. We arrived to a party and were quick to join in as our team formed a train and danced throughout the pub with the locals. We had a lot of fun and were sad to leave our new friends. We got on the bus and went back to our hotel for our dessert which was strawberry and vanilla ice cream topped with whip cream mmmmm… After everyone went to their separate rooms to shower and hit the sheets.

We slept in a bit today and hopped on the bus for the 2 hour trip to the boat that would take us from Hoek von Hollalad to Harwick, England! Cess our bus driver said we had become a part of his heart...Case our tour guide gave his hugs and we are getting on the ferry to England in a few minutes. Kickoff tomorow at 10:30 AM local time against Watford. Talk to everyone soon!

The Cowgirl's in front of the closest windmill to Amsterdam

So today we were set free to roam the streets of Amsterdam. The jhourney started with a trip to a cheese farm and wooden shoe factory! Got to see that. Cheese was yummy, but don't know how the shoes could be comfortable. Lots of cheese was purchased, so we assume that our friends and family will be getting a lot of it as gifts when we get back. Next we were off to the the Van Gogh Museum. We really enjoyed the variety of the art, we saw paintings by Rosseu, Emile Bernardi, and Monet. Van Gogh's famous flower paintings were our favorites especially The Sunflower.

We then ventured on foot to the Anne Frank house/museum. The tour takes you through her original house. You start with the beginning entries of her diary on the bottom floor of her house. As her entries progress you move up the stairways and to the Secret Annex. As you move through the house you learn about the progression of the Nazi invasion, and how it personally affected her live. By the end you see the Secret Annex where her and eight other people hid during the Nazi invasion. Sadly she died one month before the liberation, but her father Otto published her journal, and preserved the house in order to raise awareness of racism and religious persecution. On a lighter note some of the older players checked out the Heineken Factory. They learned how they make the beer and the brewing process. Of course they found some souvenirs. We finished the night at the red light district. It was interesting to say the least! By ten o'clock when we had to be back at the bus, we were pretty exhausted, but had an epic day in Amsterdam. Next is a trip to Eindhoven and a match tonight against SC'T Zand...GO POKES!!

The Cowgirl's in downtown The Hauge and in front of the Queen's Palace...also the beach in Scheveeningen

We all woke up feeling and looking more rested and refreshed from the previous day. Breakfast consisted of a buffet with various breads (which croissants were a huge hit) deli meats, yogurt, eggs, cereal, freshly squeezed orange juice and fresh brewed coffee, espresso, or tea. We left for Den Hague (The Hague) around 10. It was an hour and half drive there. Most of the drive was farmland and was really green. Once we got there, the first stop was the actual Hague center. Here the Queen arrives in her gold carriage to give her speech, the equivalent to the State of the Union. We got to walk around and saw a demonstration that Cees, our tour guide, said was nurses prostesting about their Health Care.

After walking around, we had some free time to wander around the shops and streets around the Hague. However, with no one having real cell phone service, no one was really sure what time we were supposed to leave for the beach. Emily and Bostyn took a little adventure of their own which ended with Jason and Brian running around the Hague looking for them (but we knew the whole time to be back to the bus by 1:30pm and walked on at 1:28pm).
On our way to the beach, we stopped at the Peace Palace where the world peace flame is. The peace flame was cool because there was a rock from about 100 random countries around the flame. After we took pictures with our UW Foundation bags, we stopped at the Queens Working Palace. Since the orange flag was up, the Queen was there and working. The road to the beach consisted of driving past a lot of Embassies. A lot of us had never really seen embassies before and we were all suprised to find that if you cross onto the embassy's grounds, their rules from their country apply.
The beach was a gorgeous site; there were all these clubs/restaurants with umbrella seating, firepits, and bar areas. the only down fall was that it was terribly cold and windy (just like Laramie at times but with sand and the ocean). We all ate lunch at Binky Bear. It was interesting to say the least. The food wasn't too bad, just took awhile to get translated and defined. We (Nicole and Bostyn) had a Club Sandwich BB which had salmon instead of chicken and bacon. Everyone seemed pleased for the most part.

Since the beach was not the best weather, we went back in the shopping area of the Hague until 5:30pm. We left for our game and were allowed graciously by Danny to stay on the bus and take a much needed cat nap 30 minutes before warm up. The main field at the club complex was under construction so we ended up playing Ter Leede team on a side field. It was slightly windy and a little chilly but overall nice weather for a game!! We warmed up and got pumped for the game. During the coin toss, the head ref used a Euro and asked me if I wanted Cross or Queen instead of head or tails...a little different than the US coin. We started the game off well, moving the ball working hard and keeping up the intensity. The game was tied until the second half when Ter Leede scored off a corner kick. We personally thought it was a lucky goal for them...it helps when the opposing team knocks your keeper into the goal as she is trying to punch the ball over the cross bar. But, that goal did not keep us down. We pushed harder and pumped up the intensity. We had numerous shots on goal. We had shots that barely went wide and the keeper had to make save after save after save!! Even after being denied from the amazing 16 year old Ter Leede goal keeper, 2 minutes into extratime of the game Chelsea made a pass to Jules who blasted it low to the near post slipping it underneath the keeper for an awesome game tieing goal! The ref blew the whistle right after kickoff with the ending result of a 1-1 tie against Ter Leede. We got tea in the locker room after the game and mingled in the clubhouse lobby. We then began our hour and a half adventure home. This was probably one of the most interesting, entertaining and rebellious drives home. We were looking for a place to stop to grab food so we stopped at a McDonalds. We arrived at the doors at 23:00 but with our American luck McDonalds closes their golden arches at 23:00. So, we drove to another one. It was closed as well but Cees convinced them to let us 'walk' through the 'McDrive'. This sounded like a decent idea until cars started piling up behind our team as we ordered 2 by 2 in the window. Nicole and I got a little scared when cars started reving their Dutch engines. Not only were we risking our lives for McDonalds, it costed twice as much as it would back home. In the end, the 18 car pile up in the McDrive was worth the sight as we were driving off in the bus content and happily fed. Nicole walked on the bus telling Danny that we pissed off half of Holland. Danny gave her the classic response of "who cares?"
We arrived back at the hotel at 1:30am. Everyone walked like zoombies off the bus and into the rooms. In our room (Nicole, Bostyn, Kayla and Chelsea), we all took turns on Nicole's laptop emailing our beloved and missed parents/loved ones. We tried to go to bed but we were all excited with anticipation to spend the day in Amsterdam tomorrow!! Rice and Burger agree that today was a great day of touring, soccer and friends!

Today we arrived in Amsterdam at 7 am! It was a long day of flying but worth it when we got our first view of the Netherlands. We spent the day exploring Amsterdam, going on a canal tour where we got to experience all of the common attractions, mainly the historic architecture. Not only did we get to see the beautiful historic sights but we got a taste of the modern culture too. Many girls suffered a bit of a shock when introduced to the lack of "modesty" associated with the city. Some of us spent a couple hours searching for a restroom only to find out that it cost a few cents to use the toileten! Sydney and Shalayne nearly missed the boat ride but Danny came to the rescue and stopped the boat. Our tour guide Cess gave us a look into some of the city's hotspots that we will get a better look at on Thursday. Although we had our doubts about the food here, we were pleasantly surprised with the hotels 3 course meal. As far as the rest of tonight goes, we are all looking forward to some sleep and are eagerly anticipating what tomorrow holds, including our 8 pm game against Ter Leede!

Award's Banquet Winner's

Some action shots of our 2009 Award's Banquet winners

On Saturday, April 24th, Wyoming Soccer had it's annual award's banquet. In addition to honoring our four graduating seniors, we handed out our 2009 team award's.

Newcomer of the year Mara Cosgrove: Mara started 19 of 20 games and played every minute during MWC play. She finished tied for 2nd on the team in goals from her centerback position.

Steamboat Award Jules Candelaria: This award is given to the player each year that exemplifies the spirit and commitment of being a Wyoming Cowgirl. Jules was a key member of the Pokes midfield and finished the season by starting all 20 games.

Strongest Link Strength and Conditioning Award Chelsea Coddington: Chelsea was nominated by our strength and conditioning coach Hunter Shurrer. She showed great progress over last summer and through this spring in the weightroom. Chelsea had her best season to date as she started all 20 games and had her first goal of her WYO career in a 1-0 win over Princeton.

Piece of Mind Academic Award Emily Layton: Emily finished her career with the most starts and appearances in Cowgirl history. She was a two-time NSCAA All-West Scholar team member and three-time All-MWC Academic Team member. She carries a 3.61GPA in Civil Engineering and was a two-time captain.

Defensive MVP Bostyn Burger: Bostyn had a breakout junior campaign as she started all 18 games she apreared in. She was named a captain before the season by her teammates. Bostyn helped the Cowgirls sport a 0.96 GAA on the season from her centerback position.

Offensive MVP Emma Wilson: Emma had the best season of her Cowgirl career in 2009 and was named a captain before the season. She was named 2nd Team All-MWC and was 2nd during MWC play with 4 assists and finished with 7 on the year which was good 2nd all-time in Wyoming Soccer history. Emma did all this while playing primarily as an attacking right back.

Congrats to all the award winners and to our four seniors on everything they did for Wyoming Soccer. Next up Europe 2010!!!!

WYO closes out the Spring Season

The Cowgirl's hosted the University of Northern Colorado and Regis University on April 25th to close out the spring season. Action kicked off first against our front range rival Bears from UNC. The match was a typical battle between the squads and neither team was conceding much in the attacking half. The Bears had there best chance in the 33rd minute, but GK Meagan Burke was able to corral a tight angled shot to keep it scoreless at half. The second half prodced a few chances for each squad, but nothing that was able to find the back of the net. Final was scoreless.

The second match of the day was against the Rangers from Regis University in Denver. The first half was a back and forth affair with most of the play in the midfield. The second half was a different story. The Pokes came out with more energy as it was their last half of soccer this spring. The Cowgirl's were on the attack all half and produced more chances then they had in a couple of weeks. However, it wasn't until there were two minutes on the clock left that they were able to break the deadlock. FR Shalayne Janis ran onto a ball behind the central defense of the visitor's. She rounded the GK and slotted home the only goal of the match. Final Score WYO 1 Regis 0.

The Cowgirl's finished the spring season with 7 goals for and zero against. Freshmen GK's Courtney Merkle and Meagan Burke combined to play over 720 minutes during this scoreless streak. The next match the Copwgirl's play will be in Amsterdam on May 12th. More on our Europe Trip soon!

Alumni Game Recap

Once again mother nature played havoc with the spring alumni game. After having 25 players commit to playing, only 11 actually were able to make it. However, those 11 battled to the end with no subs. The alumni were hindered by having current assistant coach Jason Green "help" them with his shoddy defending and lack of a quality final pass from his midfield slot. He did entertain the crowd with his hidden ball trick that was, unfortunately, his only quality contribution in the match. The current Cowgirl's got two goals from JR Katie Amsberry and one from SO Kayla Davis in the 3-0 win.

We appeciate the alumni that were able to make it and look to continue to grow this weekend in future years. GO POKES!

Huge Weekend in Laramie!

Our 2009 Seniors will be honored at our award's banquet on Saturday night. #3 Emily Layton (Colorado Springs, CO), #10 Morgan Johnson (Casper, WY), #14 Kerstyn Etheridge (Surrey, British Columbia) and #13 Emma Wilson(Littleton, CO)

Lots on the plate for Cowgirl fans this weekend. On Saturday we will host our annual spring alumni game at 12 PM. We are expecting over 20 former Pokes in town. It should be a fun afternoon of soccer.

At 6 PM on Saturday we will have our award's banquet in the Rochelle Athletic Center. We will be honoring award winners from this past season and our four seniors. In addition after dinner at the banquet, Darren Tooheys' highly acclaimed year end video will be premiered. The video took over 140 hours of studio time and a new $3500 MAC computer to get completed. It is sure to be something special!

On Sunday, we will host Regis University and the University of Northern Colorado in our final spring games of the year. Kickoff will be at 10:30AM against the Bears from UNC and 2:00PM against the Regis Rangers.

Cowgirl's battle against Denver

The Cowgirl's made the two hour drive down to the University of Denver to take on the Sun Belt Champion Pioneers in their final road trip of the spring on April 17th. After some heavy rain getting into the Mile High City, it turned out to be a beautiful evening for soccer. The Pokes were down to two field subs after Jerrica DiVincenzo couldn't go with a knee injury. In the 25th minute, Allison Masumiya caught a stud to her right ankle that eventually required 8 stitches (although she did play a few minutes in the 2nd half). Striker Carmen Blume had to be subbed off in the 28th minute with a tight hamstring, leaving the Cowgirl's with 11 players the rest of the match.

Chances were limited for both teams. The Pioneers had their best chance in the 82nd minute, but GK Meagan Burke was able to cut down the angle from 8 yards to the preserve the clean sheet. The Pokes had some heavy legs, but were able to put their best pressure on during the final 15 minutes of the match. The match ended in a scoreless draw. Wyoming has still not yielded a goal this spring heading into the final weekend of action. Alumni game, soccer banquet and two matches all on deck this weekend in Laramie. More on this soon!

"University of Wyoming head soccer coach Danny Sanchez announced the signing of one more student-athlete that will join the Cowgirls for the 2010 season. Nahiomy Ortiz from Victoria, British Columbia will join a class of seven other Cowgirls that signed earlier this year.
Ortiz, who is graduating from Reynolds Secondary School, is a forward that has experience playing across the globe. Ortiz, who was born in Bogota, Colombia, played for Colombia in the 2008 U17 Women's World Cup in New Zealand. She has also played in the Pacific Coast League for the Victoria Stars and was the team's leading goal scorer in 2009. Ortiz also led the Victoria Stars to the 2008 Pacific Coast League Championship. She was a member of the Canadian National Training Center from 2007-2008. Most recently, Ortiz earned the 2010 Soccer Excellence Award at Reynolds Secondary School and earned academic honor roll honors in 2007 and 2008.

"We are excited to add a player of Nahiomy's caliber to our 2010 recruiting class," Sanchez said. "She is very skilled on the ball and plays equally well with her back to goal as she does in an attacking midfield role. Nahiomy is a great addition to our attack here at Wyoming."

Meagan Burke and Courtney Merkle continued their streak of no goals allowed this spring!

The Pokes headed down to Denver on a beautiful spring day to play three matches at Regis University. After 160 minutes of action, the Pokes remain unscored upon this spring. However, the squad was disappointed in not finding the back of the net themselves.

Match #1 vs. Colorado Mines
The Cowgirl's started strong, but as would be the story for that day, couldn't translate their possession into quality scoring opportunities. The best chance of the day fell to Katie Amsberry who was put in on a goal by a pass from Kayla Davis, but the Mines keeper was up to the task. Match ended scoreless.

An almost carbon copy of match #1. The Pokes were on the attack most of the match, but quality opportunities were few and far between. Cassie Sheffield broke free late in the match, but saw her shot from 12 yards saved by the Fort Lewis GK. Match ended scoreless.

Wyoming finished up the day by taking on our Mountain West Conference rivals Air Force. Both teams saw some very heavy legs and the Pokes were down a few players because of injuries. In fact GK's Merkle and Burke saw significant playing time on the field. The Cowgirl's pushed for a late winner, but could not find the quality in the box to get it done. Another scoreless final!

The Cowgirl's made the one and a half hour drive down to Greeley, CO on Friday, March 26th to face the Bears from Northern Colorado. The ride down was made especially enjoyable with a box lunch from McAllister's Deli and watching Shawshank Redemption (again)!

The evening weather was perfect as the Pokes started out strong. As the half wore on, the Bears started getting the run of play. Carmen Blume entered the game in the 18th minute and immediately struck the left post on a shot from 22 yards. This would be the Pokes best chance of the half and the game would be scoreless at half.

The second half was a back and forth affair with few quality chances for either squad. The Cowgirl's broke the stalemate in the 57th minute. Olivia Mohtadi picked up the ball on the left flank and served an early cross to the near post. Cassie Sheffield beat the UNC GK to the ball and slid the ball into the open net. The Bears started pushing for the equalizer and had their best chance 10 minutes later when they got behind the defense, but GK Courtney Merkle was up the challenge to keep the lead for WYO. The game remained 1-0 when the Pokes added a second in the 87th minute on a counter attack. Shalayne Janis made a run up the left flank and served a nice ball to the top of the six yard box that Chelsea Coddington one-timed into the back of the net. Final score 2-0 Wyoming. Meagan Burke and Courtney Merkle combined on the shutout and the Pokes have yet to allow a goal this spring. Next up is a trip to Denver on Saturday, April 10th for a tournament at Regis University.

3 Shutouts to open spring play

#12 Olivia Mohtadi had two goals and #1 Shalayne Janis added a goal and an assist to open spring play!

The Cowgirl's collected three shutouts to open spring play this past Sunday. Each match was 60 minutes long. With only two field subs, each player got plenty of playing time with a few getting the full 180 minutes on the day. Below are the recaps of each match:

Wyoming (1) vs. Westminster (0): The Pokes battled the Griffins from Salt Lake City, UT to open the day. After some early pressure from the visitor's the Cowgirl's got on the board in the 13th minute. Shalayne Janis created a shot in the box that fell to Olivia Mohtadi. Mohtadi one-timed it into the net for the only tally of the macth. The team limited Westminster to very few chances, but were unable to add to the scoreline.

Wyoming (3) vs. Metro State (0): After a couple of games layoff, the Pokes matched up with Division II powerhouse Metro State from Denver. The Cowgirl's came out playing their best soccer of the day and were rewarded in the 17th minute with a goal from Shalayne Janis off an assist from Syd Jones. The game settled down into a back and forth affair. Wyoming added to the scoreline in the 34th minute when Jenny Johnson fed Olivia Mohtadi about 25 yards from goal. Mohtadi was able to find the upper 90 to make it 2-0. The final tally came off a long run from Jules Candelaria off an assist from Katie Amsberry in the 50th minute.

Wyoming (0) vs. Colorado Mines (0): The third match of the day saw some heavy legs for both squads. The 2009 Division II national quaterfinalists Orediggers from Golden, CO created some good early chances. The game turned into a defensive struggle with most of the match being played in the midfield. The Pokes put on some late pressure, but were unable to break down the back four for Mines.

Official spring training starts on Monday, Feb. 22nd. After 6 weeks of conditioning, weights and individual skill development, the team finished up today with the 2010 Soccer-BBall tourney. As expected, the team of Coddington, Sanchez, Blume, Merkle and Cosgrove dominated the competition in rolling to an easy victory. Disappointing performances were turned in by the teams headed up by assistant coaches Whisenant and Green. The Canadians on the squad were especially disappointed in Coach Green who had a Steve Nash shirt on, but was a shoot first...no pass point guard for his team.

Congrats to Emma Wilson (SR. Littleton, CO) and Nicole Rice (JR. Jackson, WY) for being named to the MWC All-Conference Second Team. Emma was a 4-year starter in the back for the Pokes and finished her senior year with 7 assists which was good for 2nd in the Mountain West Conference. Nicole had 3 goals in conference play in her first season starting for the Cowgirl's. The three goals was good for 3rd in conference play. Wyoming Soccer is excited to be returning Nicole and 17 others for the 2010 season. We are already back at work and looking forward to the spring season.

The Cowgirl's are heading to Provo, UT for a Halloween Day match up with the first place Cougars from BYU on Saturday. After returning Saturday night, the Pokes will head back to Provo on Tuesday for the Mountain West Tournament. On a sunny day at Louis Madrid Sports Complex, The Cowgirls hosted Utah in its final home match.....and that meant the final home match for The Cowgirl Seniors.

Pink Game tie and a tough loss at home, 2nd place in MWC play

The Pokes came out of the week with a tie in MWC play. WYO hosted a tough squad from San Diego State on Thursday and dropped a 2-0 result. The Cowgirl's were pushing for a late equalizer and were countered with a minute left to seal the result for the visting Aztecs. Saturday the Pokes hosted UNLV in our annual Pink Game to raise awareness of Breast Cancer. On an absolutely beautiful October day in Laramie, WYO fell behind in the first half on a nice goal from the visiting Rebels. The Cowgirl's battled back in the second half and got an equalizer from freshman Carmen Blume off an assist from senior Emma Wilson in the 72nd minute. Both teams had chances to win it, including a strike from senior Emily Layton that hit both posts in the first overtime. The results leave the Cowgirl's with a 3-1-1 record in the Mountain West Conference and in 2nd place with two games to play. The Pokes host the Utah Utes on Saturday at 1 PM for senior day. The Cowgirl's celebrate #17 Mara Cosgrove's gamewinner against UC-Riverside

The UNIWYO Cowgirl Classic finished up on a beautiful Sunday with the POKES battling to a 1-0 shutout win over UC-Riverside. It was a good way to finish the weekend after dropping a 2-0 match to Gonzaga on Friday. Freshmen Mara Cosgrove scored her first career goal of an assist from Senior Emma Wilson for the only scoring. The defense held strong to record its 4th shutout of the season. Thanks to all our fans who made it out this weekend. Especially all of the youth players that came out on Friday. We really appreciate your support.

Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex will host the UNIWYO Classic 9/24 - 9/26

The Cowgirl's returned from the Boise State Nike Invitational with a draw for the weekend and looking forward to hosting this weekend's tournament. After dropping a 1 nil match to Portland State, the Pokes bounced back with 1 all tie with the hosts from Boise. Emily Layton notched her 2nd goal of the season. Emma Wilson and Jules Candelaria were both named to the All-Tournament team

This weekend the Pokes are hosting the UNIWYO Cowgirl Soccer classic. Gonzaga, UC-Riverside and Boise State are all coming to town. Friday's match will be against Gonzaga from the West Coast Conference. Sunday WYO will host UC-Riverside. Friday's game is Laramie Youth Soccer Day and all youth players wearing their jerseys get in free! In addition volleyball is hosting two MWC matches and football is tangling with UNLV on Saturday. Up and down weekend in Laramie

The Pokes hosted two matches this weekend at the Louis S. Madrid Soccer Complex. The Tigers from Princeton came to town on Friday. After some back and forth play, #6Chelsea Coddington notched her first career goal which stood up for a 1-0 victory. The storyline wasn't as great on Sunday. After watching the first shot from visiting Idaho State hit the net, the Cowgirl's responded with a nice finish by #8 Carmen Blume off an assist from Jerrica DiVincenzo. The game seemed destined for overtime, when an own goal did the Pokes in with 3 minutes to go. It is time to get back to work as we head to Boise, ID to face Portland State and Boise State this weekend.

The Cowgirl's headed to Utah and came away with a win and a tie on the road. The weekend started with a 2-1 win over Utah Valley. Seniors Emma Wilson and Emily Layton tallied their first goals of the year, with the winner coming late. After a short trip to Logan, UT, WYO battled the preseason WAC favorities Utah State to a 1-1 draw. Freshmen Olivia Mohtadi notched her 3rd goal of the season in the 84th minute to earn the draw. Overall they were good results on our first extended road trip of the fall. Princeton and Idaho State come to town this weekend! Go POKES!!!

Solid team performance. Team came out with good urgency to avenge last fall's loss at Western Michigan. Carmen Blume chipped the keeper after a nice ball through ball by Emma Wilson in the first half. Courtney Merkle made a key save with about 15 minutes left and the Cowgirl's killed off the rest of the game. It would have been nice to get another goal, but the result was great. Short week as we train Tuesday and Wednesday at home before heading to Utah Thursday morning. Training at Utah Valley on Thursday afternoon and the game is Friday at 4 PM. We are looking forward to our first true road trip this fall. GO POKES!!!!

Olivia Mohtadi and Carmen Blume combined on two goals and the rest of the team contributed in the shutout. The 2009 University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer season will officially start with the first regular season match on Saturday against the Denver Pioneers.

The game originally was scheduled to be played at 6 p.m. at the home field of DU, but has been relocated to the Regis University Soccer Field at 4 p.m.

Steamboat Springs 2009

Three beautiful days in Steamboat Springs, CO (Ski Town USA). Everyone survived the team hike (even the coaching staff), and we got in some competitive training sessions. The weather was perfect as usual. We were fortunate to have Dr. Joe Quatrochi come and give us a talk (www.joequatrochi.com). It was very motivational and we will definitley focus on his 3 points!

After a bright and early wake-up call to do the Man U fitness test, the squad hit the field for it's first session of the fall. Technical work was followed by some speed of play and target play. The training session ended with a spirited 7v7 games. 11 aside tonight.

Residential and Team Camp's are a huge success!

The residential camp went great! The coaching staff did an amazing job running sessions! The street soccer tournament on the last day with the music and the microphone was a huge success like always! The team spirit award had to go to Darren Toohey's Quantas Socceroo's.

The team camp was a bit of an unknown, but like the other camps, was a huge success!All of the teams had a great time getting top notch training and having some much needed team building! The Kelly Walsh Boy's had a huge upset in their last match of the week against the Laramie Men's All-Stars led by assistant coach Jason Green! Thanks to Kelly Walsh Boy's, Kelly Walsh Girl's, Lander Girl's, Campbell County Girl's and Cheyenne Central Girl's who all made it out.

WYO Soccer Day Camp

We had another successful week of day camp! With well over 60 campers, the staff had a great time with the group!

Jules, Kerstyn, Morgan, Jerrica, Ryann, Bostyn, Kayla and Emma did a great job all week!

We are looking forward to our residential camp in July! We have a ton of campers already signed up with plenty of space left, and a great staff lined up of top coaches from accross the world!

Every May, student-athletes hop in vans and travel throughout Wyoming holding clinics. Players from Soccer, WBasketball, MBasketball, Football and Volleyball are able to work with kids while sending the message of the importance of education. This year Morgan Johnson, Jules Candelaria, Jerrica Divincenzo and Emma Wilson represented soccer and had a great time. They visited Hanna, Rawlings, Riverton, Kemmerer, Mountain View, and Rock Springs....it was a busy week! We hope all the kids had a great time.

Alumni Game Recap

Despite the late spring weather that rolled through northern Colorado and southeastern Wyoming, the current Cowgirl's suited up against over 20 former Cowgirl's on Saturday, April 18th in a 90 minute battle. The Alumni came from close (down the road) and far (Seattle, North Carolina, etc...) to get reaquainted and show the current squad that they still have the magic. After a back and forth first 20 minutes, Emily Layton slotted home the first goal. Katie Amsberry added a tally just before half-time. The current Cowgirl's added scores early in the second half by Nicole Rice and Kerstyn Etheridge. However, the Alumni showed that there was no quit in their game. Wyoming's all-time leading scorer Mercy Adetoye slipped through the defense and slotted a beautiful ball to Corey Thieman who slammed it home (with her feet and not her head as she usually does). Just minutes later Kelly McShane (4th all-time on the WYO scoring ledger) finished off the scoring for the day...with a bit of controversey. The two game game officials (Toohey and Green) clearly missed that the ball had crossed the line and that was confirmed a goal after a video reply. They have both been given 11 month bans from officiating by FIFA (until next spring's Alumni game). All in all it was a great day and the Alumni kept it going by discussing the match at Altitude's after. Thanks to all who could make it!

Great Saturday in Boulder!

The Cowgirl's had a great Saturday in Boulder this past weekend. After an early wake-up call, the Pokes made the two hour trip down to face Denver, Colorado and MWC rival Air Force. It would be a test of stamina and mental toughness as each team would play three consecutive 50 minute games, with just 10 minutes in between each match.

Game #1 WYO vs. University of Denver
The Pioneers from Denver started out fast and had some good possesion to start the match. Neither team was able to establish much in the way quality chances for most of the match. The game settled into a battle in the midfield with not much getting done in the final third. WYO's best chance came with 10 minutes remaining when Jules Candelaria hit the crossbar on a long range effort. Very few looks after that and it ended in a scoreless draw.

Game #2 WYO vs. University of Colorado
The Buffs from Boulder put their stamp on the match early with goal called back on an offside call and a bomb that rattled the crossbar. The Cowgirl's settled down after that and Emily Layton was disappointed to not do better with an effort in the 23rd minute after splitting the defense, but pushing her effort wide. After more back and forth play, the Pokes produced the only goal of the game. Layton drew a foul just off the endline, outside the box. Jerrica DiVincenzo served a nice ball to the far post that Corey Thieman headed in. The Pokes withstood some late Colorado pressure to hold on to a 1-0 win.

Game #3 Wyo vs. Air Force
Both teams were fatigued from the earlier matches and it showed during the outset. The game settled down and the Pokes started putting pressure on the Falcons goal. In the 27the minute Wyoming was rewarded with a goal from Amanda Lathrop off an assist from Emily Layton. After the goal, both teams had quality chances, but the Pokes defense was determined to not give up a goal on the day. Spearheaded by Chelsea Coddington, Morgan Johnson and Bostyn Burger (who each played all 150 minutes on the day!) the Cowgirl's held AFA scoreless and secured another shutout in the 1-0 win.

Sir Elton John Visit's Laramie

Sir Elton John visited Laramie this past weekend and played for over 2 and a half hours to a packed Arena Auditorium.

The Wyoming soccer coaching staff and some of the players were able to attend the concert, as it was 10 feet away from the Wyoming soccer office and the locker room in The Arena Auditorium.

Although most of the players didn't know any of his songs, he was hit with the older members of the coaching staff!

Our trip to Tempe

After arriving late on Friday night, the team trained early on Saturday morning at ASU. After training was a trip to the Tempe Arts Festival and to the Chandler Fashion Mall. Dinner at Darren's new house in Tempe capped off the day. Plenty of food to go around and a viewing of Slumdog Millionaire followed. After dinner, the team cheered on the US Men's National Team as they rallied to tie El Salvador 2-2 on late goals from Jozy Altidore (why doesn't he start??) and our now favorite surfer/baller Frankie Hejduk! Good to get a point on the road, but three points should have been secured!

Sunday brought game day!

Game #1 WYO vs. Arizona State...The squad came out a bit slow and was put under immediate pressure from their Pac-10 counterparts. After surviving a flurry of corners and possesion from the Sun Devils, the Cowgirl's settled down and went into break tied at 0-0. The second half was more of a back and forth affair and the Devils scored a well earned goal in the 70th minute. WYO then started to add some pressure and were unlucky not to equalize in the final minute as Kayla Davis' header just missed off a free kick from Emily Layton. Overall a good performance in the 80 minute competition.

Game #2 WYO vs. University of Arizona...U of A was low on players and the Cowgirl's agreed to play them in a 25-minute 8v8 match about 1 hour after they finished their match with ASU. A disappointing start lead to the Cowgirl's going down 2-0 within 8 minutes. WYO settled down after that and were rewarded 18 minutes in on a goal from Amanda Lathrop off a feed from Emily Layton. The play was picked up, but we were not able to find an equalizer.

Game #3 WYO vs. Banat Premier...After a well earned lunch and two hour break, the Cowgirl's faced the top women's league team in Arizona in a 90 minute match. Banat was well stocked with numerous former Division 1 players and came out with all the play. Banat was rewarded for their fast start with a well placed goal in the 36th minute. Things turned even worse for the Cowgirl's Kayla Davis went down with a nasty broken ankle (more on that below) just minutes later. WYO was able to regroup and found a equalizer in the 40th minute on a goal from Kelly Parkhurst (Cassie Sheffield with the assist). The second half was much better for the Cowgirl's. Although Kerstyn Etheridge and Allison Masumiya went down with injuries in the first half, the short handed Pokes continued to battle. A 73rd minute strike for Cassie Sheffield off a goal mouth scramble and a nice feed from Nicole Rice to Parkhurst closed out the scoring for the day. A great way to finish the long soccer day.

Kayla Davis had successful surgery in Scottsdale. It will be a long battle to get back, but the doctor's are happy with how everything went. We hope to see her on the field again soon!

WYO Soccer heading to AZ!

On Friday, the Cowgirls will fly to AZ to play a pair of spring games @ Arizona State University.

We will have a full slate of events planned on Saturday, with training in the AM, a spring training game in the afternoon, a trip to The Chandler Fashion Center, as well as checking out the Tempe Arts Festival on Mill Ave.

Saturday night, we will have a dinner at Darren Toohey's new house in Tempe! They will surely not miss the 7:00pm kick-off of the World Cup qualifier between The United States and El Salvador.

Sunday, they kick off against Arizona State University @ 9:00am at The Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. They will play another match at 2:30pm as well at The Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.

Hope all of the loyal AZ following can make it out to a game!

Cowgirl's open spring play with two wins!

Emily Layton leads Wyoming to open spring play
Two sixty minute matches and two wins to start the spring season on Saturday. Wyoming welcomed the University of Northern Colorado and Colorado Mines to Laramie for a mini-tournament to get the spring matches started.

In the first match, the Cowgirl's were pitted against UNC. Wyoming got on the board first when sophomore Kayla Davis headed in a corner kick from fellow sophomore Jerrica DiVincenzo in the 8th minute. Wyoming added another in the 20th minute when sophomore Katie Amsberry slotted a nice ball that junior Emily Layton slammed home. UNC got on the board in the 25th minute and it went to half 2-1 Wyoming. The second half was a back and forth affair that went scoreless. The Bears from Greeley, CO put on some good pressure in the final 10 minutes, but a nice save from freshman GK Ryann Torrero, the crossbar and solid defense from the Pokes kept UNC off the board. Final score Wyoming 2, UNC 1.

After UNC and Colorado Mines battled to a 1 all tie, Wyoming were matched up with the Orediggers from Golden, CO. Wyoming came out with more purpose and poise and were rewarded in the 24th minute with a another goal from Emily Layton off an assist from Jerrica DiVincenzo. Just 3 minutes later, freshman Kelly Parkhurst made a nice run down the flank and won a corner kick. After the initial ball was defended, the Cowgirl's kept it alive and junior Kerstyn Etheridge headed in for a 2 nil lead at the half. The second half saw a few chances for each squad, but neither team could bulge the 'ol onion bag. Final score WYO 2, CSM 0.

Wyoming now trains for a couple of more weeks before spring break starts on March 14th. The Cowgirl's next head to Tempe, AZ on March 27th. There they will face Pac-10 opponents the University of Arizona and Arizona State University on March 29th. This will be a homecoming of sorts as Danny grew up just a few minutes from ASU. In addition, Jason and Cassie are from Chandler, and Bostyn is from Gilbert. More info on this trip coming soon.

Behind two goals from Micheal Bradley, the US got off to a great start on the road to qualifying for World Cupo 2010 in Soth Africa. The team came over to Danny's house to evaluate the game and root on the red, white and blue.

Each Wyoming Cowgirl rated each player's performance, and the team average is listed below, along with random comments from the team as well!

Brian Ching (6.41)- Stayed on the left side of the field, but was the main target in the attack. Ching did a good job of holding the ball (Kelly Parkhurst).

Clint Dempsey (6.25)- Pinches in to let the outside back get forward. Helped defend well thru-out the match. Lost the ball too much, especially in the 2nd half (Jerrica DiVincenzo).

Landon Donavon (8.09)- Did a good job of getting into the box in the attack (Katie Amsberry). Usually received 1st ball from the MF, more of a playmaker, plays the way he is facing...if he plays the ball, he wants it back (Kayla Davis).

Demarcus Beasley (7.81)- Squeezed in to the middle, holds the ball well, involved in the attack. Switched sides with Dempsey to unbalance the mexican defense. Very composed, saw the field well and helped in the defense as well (Morgan Johnson).

Micheal Bradley (8.9)- More of a holding center mid. Drops deep into the midfield to receive balls. Good in the air and the tackle. Good at striking the ball! Good combinations and movements off of the ball. Did a good job of building the attack for the americans (Kayla Davis).

Sasha Kljesten (5.6)- Stayed in sync with the midfield, did a good job of sliding with the midfield, but could not link his passes. Played a little higher then Bradley, but did not do a good job of controlling the midfield. Had a poor 2nd half and was replaced (Kerstyn Etheridge).

Heath Pierce (6)- Struggled with the pace of the match, looked like a deer in the headlights. Everytime the camera showed him, I was not sure if I was watching soccer or Fear Factor. Cherundulo should move to left back when he returns from suspension, and Hejduk should stay at right back (Coach Jason Green).

Carlos Bocanegra (7.18)- Good defensive pressure, read the play and the game well (Emily Layton).

Oguchi Onweyu (6.83)- Wins 50/50's all over the field, pressure's the ball well, supports well, needs to clear the ball a little better. He did a great job of keeping the corner kick's alive (Emma Wilson).

Frankie Hejduk (8.11)- Active on offense, very aggressive on the challenge, wins 50/50 balls and tackles hard!! (Allison Masumiya).

Tim Howard (8.75)- Big save to keep Americans in the match early. Cover's goal well, quick off his line. Cuts off the cross, cover's the 18 well. Very clean (Ryann Torrero).

Jozy Altidore (6)- Did a good job of holding the ball on the 2nd goal. Needs to be a little more aggressive going forward (Coach Murph).

Rico Clark (6.33)- Too much ball watching, dove in too much as well. Needs to make smarter decisions to kill off match (Brian O, Head Physio).

The Man of The Match, unanimously, was Micheal Bradley (He was also voted "Hottest" player by the team as well).

Kayla Davis wins the award for the best match report. All of her points were spot on and her report was detailed and to the point.

The US will now travel to El Stadio Cuscatlan in San Salvador, El Salvador to take on "Selección Cuscatleca" on March 28th, time is TBA.

Carmen Blume

5'6" Forward, Calgary, Alberta Canada (Calgary Academy)

Blume was the co-captain for her club team, the Calgary Foothills Colts for five seasons. Blume and her team were five-time Provincial Champions, and two-time Canadian National Champions in 2007 and 2008. She was a Provincial team member for three years and along with soccer, lettered in basketball, cross country, and volleyball.

"Carmen is a bit of an unknown in that she is coming off some injuries, but we feel that she can have an immediate impact on our team. Having won two National Championships with the Calgary Colts, we feel Carmen is capable of contributing right away up top or in the back."

Meghan Burke

In the state of Colorado, Burke earned 5A All-Conference honors from 2006-2008. Burke also played for the Puerto Rico under 17 and 23 national teams in World Cup Qualifiers. Along with soccer, Burke also competed in basketball and swimming at Green Mountain High School. Meagan played her club soccer with the Colorado Storm.

"Meagan has all the tools to be a very good keeper. She has good size and great distribution. Meagan will have the opportunity to compete immediately for time in goal."

Mara Cosgrove

5'8'', Defender, Thornton, Colo. (Legacy High School)

Cosgrove was the team-captain for two years at Legacy High School. She earned First Team All-Conference in 2007 and 2008, as well as second team All-State in 2008. Cosgrove also played basketball where she earned honorable mention All-Conference in 2006-07. Her basketball team was second place in the 5A State Championship in 2007 when she was the team captain. Academically, Cosgrove was four time Academic All-Conference, National Honor Society member for three years, and Academic Letter Winner for four years.

"Mara is great in the air and strong in the tackle. She has played primarily center midfield growing up, but has been moved to center back with her Colorado Rush Club team. We feel that she is capable of stepping in and competing for time along the backline."

Taylor Grillo

At Cherry Creek High School, Grillo led her team to the 5A State Championship game in 2007, and State Semi-Finals in 2008. Her club team, Riverside Renegades, were the 2007 Colorado State Cup Champions and runner-up in 2008. Grillo earned high school letters in soccer her sophomore through senior seasons.

"Taylor has great pace and the ability to run at people. She has had a lot of success with her Riverside SC Club team, winning multiple state championships. With Taylor's athleticism, she will compete for time in the wide midfield and up top."

Shalayne Janis

Janis was a four year varsity starter for Mountain View High School. In 2007 she led her team to the state semi-finals and earned All-State Honorable Mention. In 2008, Janis was the team captain and earned First Team All-Valley. She played her club soccer with the Utah Rush.

"Shalayne is a very creative player who sees the field well and will really add to our attack. She is versatile and can play any role in the midfield, but will primarily be looked upon to add a spark to our play in the final third."

Johnson played on the Fort Collins Arsenal Club Team. As a team captain her team was in the Colorado State Cup Semi-Finals in 2007 and 2008. For her high school team, Johnson lettered all four years and was named 2008 First Team All-Conference. Johnson also lettered three years in basketball.

"We feel that Jenny can have a real impact on our Cowgirl Program. Jenny really moves the ball around well and also pushes up into the attack. She gets all of teammates involved and will improve our midfield play."

Sydney Jones

Jones was apart of the 5A District Championship team in 2006 and 2008 in South Texas. She was named to the 2008 All-District team for her efforts. On her Challenge Club Team, Jones was apart of the 2003,2004,2006, and 2007 National Cup South Texas State Championship team. Academically, Jones earned letters three years, and was a National Honor Society member in 2008 and 2009.

"Sydney came to us late in the recruiting process, but is a player with good size and reads the game well. She is capable of playing anywhere along the backline. She has had a ton of success with the Challenge Soccer Club."

Olivia Mohtadi

Olivia Mohtadi, 5'10'', Forward, Calgary, Alberta, Canada (Central Memorial High School)

In 2008, Mohtadi was the top scorer in her high school conference with 26 points. Her Calgary Foothills Colts Club team won Canadian Nationals twice in a row in 2007 and 2008. She participated two years in volleyball and basketball in high school as well and was a 2006 Provincial team member.

"Olivia has won two national championships with her Calgary Colts Club team and brings great experience to the Cowgirls. She will to compete for time immediately upfront, but also has a nice left foot that may see time on the flank."

The US Soccer Foundation, in an effort to break the world record for most shoes strung together, did it by tying together 11,904 pairs of shoes.....now, the effort for the world record was great, but the real reason for this was to get soccer shoes donated to the "Pass Back" program, for disadvantaged to receive soccer equipment all over the world.

The University of Wyoming Women's players loaded up a travel bag full of cleats they don't use anymore, and the soccer staff took them to the NSCAA convention to help break the world record!!

The University of Wyoming Womens Soccer Team was once again chosen for another award by The NSCAA. They were awarded The NSCAA team Ethics Silver Award. The team only received 1 yellow card and no red cards all season long!

Senior Weekend

Wyoming will host their final home game of the season Saturday against BYU, and that brings with it, the honoring of the seniors. Friday night, there will be a senior dinner for the seniors and their guests. The following day, the seniors will be honored in a pre-game ceremony leading up to the 11:00am kick-off against BYU.

Jay Troutt, a friend of Wyoming Assistant Coach Jason Green, recently traveled to Kenya Africa. Below is a letter Coach Troutt wrote about his trip and there are some great pictures as well!

Hi Coach Green,

Some soccer information from Kenya. First of all . . . WOW what a place, the talent that some of these young kids have with the limited equipment is amazing. (very few girls play soccer with any intensity. Sorry, no recruits.)

The "balls" that they played with are grocery store bags rolled up and tied up with string; they made it work quite well. As for the goal posts, well, you can see what they are made of and the field was very primitive.

The last day we were there we started to install real goal posts and lay out the field dimensions. It is too bad I did not get to see the finished project.

One picture you can see the size of the thorns on the field. In fact, two of the soccer balls got punctured the first day we used them, yet 40 to 50% of the students have no shoes. You can see that in an action photo were one guy is kicking the ball while playing in golf shoes and the other kid chasing him has no shoes on at all.

The people of Mereru, Kenya were very very appreciative of the soccer balls and know that if they stuffed the flattned balls with dry grass that they could continue to use them effectively.

Thanks for your help Jason, I wish you could have been there to instruct/coach them, it would have been great fun.

Hubbard Named Mountain West Defensive Player of The Week

Senior defender Laine Hubbard was named Mountain West Defensive Player of The Week after the only goal in a 1-0 win over Airforce and a solid perfromance in a 1-0 win over Boise State.

Hubbard joins team-mate Amanda Lathrop, who won Offensive Player of The Week earlier this season as Cowgirls who have won that honor this season.

The Cowgirls will continue conference play this weekend as they host TCU and New Mexico.

The Cowgirls teamed up with the Laramie Soccer Association for their 30 year anniversary celebration. The girls helped run some of the soccer stations such as the hardest shot, the longets kick, soccer golf, shooting accuracy and shooting on a celebrity goalie!!!!! The girls and the kids had a great time.

For the first time in Wyoming Soccer history, the Cowgirls went on the road and played at 2 different schools and came away with 2 wins!!!!!

In game one, Wyoming dominated in all aspects of the game and came away with a 3-0 win against Idaho in Moscow (Idaho, not Russia). Amanda Lathrop netted 2 goals and added an assist, while Emily Layton added a goal and an assist while Jerrica Divincenzo added an assist for The Cowgirls. Jamie Scarcliff notched her second shut-out of the 2008 campaign.

In game two of the weekend, Wyoming played a tough Gonzaga team on Sunday afternoon. Wyoming would come out focused in the first half and waisted no time scoring when Nicole Rice got to the endline, played Amanda Lathrop, who beat the keeper to the right to give The Cowgirls the lead. A couple big saves by Jamie Scarcliff earned her her third shut-out of the year and the second strait win for The Cowgirls.

The Cowgirls hit the road again and roll into Pocatello, Idaho to take on Utah Valley and Idaho State this weekend.

Record Setting Day

The Cowgirls set some records in a 7-0 win against visiting South Dakota. Amanda Lathrop set 2 records, with 3 assists in a game, which gave her the career assist record at Wyoming.

Jaime Scarcliff got her first shut-out of the season making 1 save.

Seven different Cowgirls scored in the match, as Jerrica Divincenzo opened the scoring for Wyoming, while Laine Hubbard, Corey Thieman, Emily Layton, Lathrop, Cassie Sheffield and Kayla Davis all scored in the win.

After a tough result away to Western Michigan, The Cowgirls returned to the one and only Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex for their home opener against The Bryant Bulldogs. Bryant was coming off of a big win at Northern Colorado in over-time Friday Night.

The Bulldogs got off to a fast start, when in the 16th minute, Brooke Duchaney got in behind The Cowgirl back four and centered a pin-point cross to Kaitlyn Hinck, who one timed it to give Bryant the 1-0 advantage. That would be the last clear attempt on the Wyoming goal, as The Cowgirls would waste no time to equalize, when in the 28th minute, Allison Masumiya stripped the Bryant midfielder of the ball, dished the ball to Jules Candaleria, who then found Amanda Lathrop, who slipped a nice pass to Emily Layton on the top of the box. Layton cut the ball past the defender and fired the equalizer into the lower left corner. The half would end tied at one.

The second half would start with a bang for The Cowgirls. GK Jaime Scarcliff would distribute the ball to Masumiya, who would send a nice through ball to Amanda Lathrop. Lathrop calmly collected the ball, dribbled past the goal keeper and slotted the game winner into the open net. The Cowgirls were not done, as they would strike again when Lathrop would find Nicole Rice who would push the ball to the middle and fire a turbo blaster from 30 yards out that would find the upper right corner of the goal to give The Cowgirls the 3-1 advantage.

Wyoming would hold onto the 3-1 lead and thats how the match ended.

Friday, August 29th, The Cowgirls host South Dakota at Louis S. Madris Sports Complex. Kick-off slated for 4:00pm. Sunday, The Cowgirls make the short trip to Greeley, Colorado where they will face off with Da Bears of Northern Colorado. This will be a 7:00pm kick-off under the lights.

Preseason update from Ski Town USA!!!!

Day 1

After a 2 hour drive from Laramie to Steamboat Springs we arrived at Fish Creek Falls for a 5 mile hike up the mountain. The group made it to the top where we took a number of pictures and enjoyed the view of the falls and surrounding area.

From there, we ate lunch and headed to the condos where we are staying. Normally used for lodging during the ski season. The cabin feel is comfy and we got settled in and relaxed a bit before training.

Training went well, as we trained on some nice fields outside of town. The team looked sharp and worked hard in the session with a great view of the ski slopes behind us.

We went back to the condos where the first group cooked a tasty pasta dish, flanked with bread, salad and Gatorade!

After a meeting and some inspiring stories from the group, we are off to bed and ready to wake up bright and early to cheer on the USA Olympic Women in their battle to advance to the knock-out stage with a result over New Zealand.

Two-A-Days

The team continues to work hard this week. Every day they are practicing in the morning followed by a strength and conditioning session. A team lunch follows then free time for the team. In the afternoon the team is back on the practice field for their second practice session for the day. Every afternoon the dark clouds have rolled in and it has rained which has made practice cooler (and slippery). The rain usually only lasts about 10 minutes then it heats up again as the Cowgirls work hard on their skills and team work.

Manchester United runs at 6:30 AM on Wednesday, August 6th. Training at 8 AM and 3 PM most days. All Cowgirl fans are welcome to come out and watch training. Contact the soccer office at 307-766-4035 to keep updated on our preseason training.

We will be heading to Steamboat Springs, CO (Ski Town, USA!)for a few days starting August 11th for training. No skiing, but plenty of soccer. First exhibition Augsut 15th against Fort Lewis College. See you all soon. GO POKES!!!!

2008 Captains Announced!

Amanda Lathrop and Laine Hubbard have been names captains of the 2008 squad.

This is the second year for Lathrop as a captain. She is coming off a Second Team All-Conference season in 2007 and has been a starter since she stepped on campus.

Laine has been a consistent starter since her freshman year at left back. She has started every match of her career since the fifth game of her freshman campaign.

Congratulations to both.
